On May 11th,2018,Prof. Bharat Balasubramanian, executive director ofCenter for Advanced Vehicle Technologies inUniversity of Alabama (UA), professor in both the Mechanical Engineering and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments at UA,visited HUT and met with Tan Yimin, President ofHunan University of Technology and had discussions on cooperation between the two universities in various forms such as student/staff exchanges and cooperations in the integration of production, teaching and research.The leaders fromoffice ofinternationalcooperation and exchange,college of transportation engineering, college of electrical and information engineering, college of mechanical engineering and college of computer sciencetook part in the meeting.
President Tan Yimin welcomed Prof.Bharat Balasubramanian and introduced to him the internationalization of education in HUT, the featured teaching and colleges and the intercollegiate cooperation of HUT. He highly praised Prof.Bharat Balasubramanian’s distinguished career in the enterprise, and his unremitting efforts in automotive innovation and self-driving car technologies both in academic exploration and business application, especially in thestrengtheningofthe ties between universities and industries after being employed as a professor at UA. He hoped that Prof.Bharat Balasubramanian’s visit to HUT will promote the cooperation in such fields of engineering, the combination of production, learning and research and the joint training of doctoral students between HUT and UA, and so on so forth.
In the following week, Prof.Bharat Balasubramanian made a series of academic reports on advanced automotive technology through seminars and lectures for faculties and students from the colleges of transportation engineering, computer science and electrical and information engineering.
The topics of the seminars are‘A Cross-Discipline Research Collaborations on Automotive Innovation -- Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies in UA’ and‘German Dual System Undergraduate/Graduate Education Models Based on Deep Integration of Campus and Enterprise’. The topics of lectures are‘The Road Ahead - Automotive Emerging Technology’,‘Safety First - The Evolution of Autonomous Driving’ and‘Automated Driving in USA - Status and Future’.
In the series of academic reports, Prof.Bharat Balasubramanian conducted active and full discussions with the faculties and students of HUT on academic topics, and shared his experience both from working in the enterprises as well as in the scientific research. After the academic reports, Prof.Bharat Balasubramanian visited the labs in the college of electrical and information engineering and the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, obverved students in their experiments and encouraged students to innovate and start entrepreneuring.

Prof.Bharat Balasubramanian received his Bachelor’s Degree from IIT Bombay, and Master’s and PhD in Automotive Engineering from the Technical University of Karlsruhe.He is the executive director ofCenter for Advanced Vehicle Technologies inUniversity of Alabama and professor in both the Mechanical Engineering and the Electrical and Computer Engineering departments atUniversity of Alabama.Hehasheld a distinguished career of 38 years at Mercedes-Benz/Daimler where he rose to bethe Group VP of Research and Advanced Engineering and became known as the father and champion for self-driving car technologies.
